Changing a furnace air filter is a job that is easy and cheap to do yourself.  The purpose of a filter to a forced-air furnace is to keep dust, soot, and other air borne dirt from the air that blows in your living room.  Because air more trouble a dirt-laden filter pass, has your furnace to work harder when the filter gets dirty.

The filter at least a few times during the primary heating season, and as often as every month if you live in a dusty environment, or if your furnace must work long hours change.  If your central air conditioning unit also through your furnace filter circulates, you may need to replace the filter during the cooling season too.
