WADI: Water solar disinfection unit could save 400,000 lives a year
Water is life – without a source of water for drinking and cooking, humans become very ill and often die. In rich countries, drinking water is taken for granted. In developing countries, access to water often means walking long distances, and there is no guarantee as to how to clean, it will be once you get there. Enterprise social Austrian Helioz start-up has developed a low-cost device that uses solar energy to disinfect questionable water. The Wadi detects and calculates the intensity of UV rays water purification, and it allows users to know as soon as the water is drinkable.
Helioz is not just an another technology start-up. It is ‘a dedicated team of physicians, economists, scientists and coordinators of projects with partners worldwide [work] to bring drinking water to the people living at the bottom of the pyramid’.
This depth allows the company to go beyond the tools of purification of the water that had been previously tested on the market. They understand that they need to really make a difference in the lives of the millions who live without access to clean water, to simplify the design to make it cheap and less likely to break or need spare parts.
WADI is a device developed to show the status of the solar disinfection of water in a PET bottle without the use of chemicals, batteries or filters. WADI uses the SODIS method to purify contaminated water, where UV – A rays in the rays of the Sun are used to kill germs such as viruses, bacteria and parasites. Instead of letting users, you wonder if they have left water in the Sun long enough for total purification, WADI the Sun’s UV radiation measurements and calculates the duration of the disinfection process. “As soon as enough radiation hit the bottle, WADI allows the user knows that water is drinking” with a bar of State and smiley face to the screen. When a smiley of the water, it is ready to drink!
The WADI has already been tested in India and Africa and function, more great health NPO of the Austria the Arbeiter Samariter Bund, “WADI is a viable solution for clean, safe drinking water, particularly for the rural poor.”
Helioz wants to conduct an Impact study full health in India to provide evidence on a large scale of the efficiency of the WADI in reducing waterborne disease, with the potential to save hundreds of thousands of lives each year. They company is in the midst of a campaign’s Indiegogo crowdfunding to raise funds for supplementary search.
